TAMPA- Nature’s Classroom, where Hillsborough County school-children study ecosystems and other environmental subjects, is about to receive $904,717 to help renovate its building.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Hillsborough River Basin Board has approved the gift to help complete construction on the environmental center, administrative building and interpretive center. The gift can be reimbursed through the state’s Water Management Lands Trust Fund.
Nature’s Classroom is on 365 acres of land owned by Swiftmud on the Hillsborough River. Built in 1969, the work on the facility is part of a major renovation, including replacing a boardwalk and building, new boat docks, an aviary and outdoor classroom. The Hillsborough Education Foundation raised more than $2.5 million in a campaign to help with the upgrades.
Nature’s Classroom serves more than 13,000 sixth-grade students each year.
